He is still and she hates it.
Because it is her dream, her reality and it hurt him and she knows and she loathes knowing, almost as much as she loathes breathing when his whole body is still. The room echoes with quiet until Jason, of all people, breaks it with a horrible wail. The next thing she knows, Lynn and Brandon and Sami and all of them are on the ground sobbing. She wishes she could join them, but all she feels is empty and the tears just will not come.
“No….” She murmurs to the sky. “This can’t be happening.”
But it is and that’s what hurts most of all.
Knowing that she can’t just pretend this away.
“What a shame,” that horrid voice snickers, “I was hoping to kill your little princey here first.” She uses her knife to gesture to Jones’ neck. He lets out a pathetic whimper, which stirs no emotions within Alyssa. Not anymore. Not when she is so alone without him beside her.
She glances down at him and gently runs a hand along his cold cheek.
“I guess casualties are to be expected in a war zone though.” The cruel woman laughs this time, vile and wicked and coated in oil. Alyssa ignores her. Tenderly she lays her head on his chest and listens to the emptiness, hating herself.
“Look at me!” The woman demands suddenly. The knife at Jones’ throat grazes against his flesh, cutting into it just a bit. If Alyssa notices she doesn’t show it. Her head is buried in the crook of his neck and her fingers are trailing along his face, memorizing his jaw and trying to keep everything that he is inside of her. Always.
She is so cold and he is so still and it’s her fault and there’s nothing she can do.
Thump.
She thinks she imagined it for a moment. She presses herself even harder against him and begs all the gods to hear her plea.
Silence.
Then:
Thump.
Small and fresh and all she needed to hear. All she needed to know.
“It’s funny.” She says as she lifts herself off of him, raising her head until her eyes lock with the cruel woman who looks far too much like Alyssa herself for it to be a coincidence. “At first I didn’t want to believe. I didn’t think I could do something like this. Sure, my imagination was strong, but it wasn’t real. But here you are. And here I am. And you’re real. Really real. Flesh and bones even. I really didn’t want to believe it.”
The knife is held slack by the cruel one’s side, forgotten for the moment. She is much more intent upon looking into Alyssa’s eyes.
Beyond them, people are screaming and five very lost teenagers are still crying.
“But I can’t deny it anymore. You’re real. Which means you’ve escaped from my mind. And brought all my darkness with you. I guess you were hoping to get rid of me in order to feel safe. If I’m kept weak and useless, I can’t send you back. If you make sure that I’m worn down to nothing, you can walk all over me.”
Fear flickers in her other’s eyes for a brief moment.
“Listen,” Her other commands, “You will shut up right now, unless you want to die.” She extends the knife and glances about wildly.
“You can’t kill me, Lenora.” Her other’s eyes widen. “I’m the only thing tying you to this earth.”
“I can still kill all of them!” She yells frantically.
“I won’t let you.”
“Ha! What a joke. You couldn’t even stop me from killing that pathetic band geek friend of yours.” She snarls.
“But I did….” Alyssa whispers, turning slightly to watch the slight rise and fall of Dan’s chest. In her head she repeats it over and over, in and out in an out. She imagines him breathing, living. And not-so-surprisingly it is enough.
“No….” The other’s face is twisted in horror. “I’ve made you too weak – y-you can’t!”
“Enough. You are a part of me. I’m the one in charge here. And I won't let you hurt anyone else!”
As she speaks it’s as if the world is suddenly being ripped open. The lights flash as something nearby emits a loud roar. She can barely see, her eyes have been filled with too much white, but all she knows is that she wants her other self gone. Gone and dead and buried back inside of her so deep that she’ll never be allowed sunlight ever again. Behind her someone screams again, but all she knows is destruction and all she can feel is death and loss and she will not let her hurt them again. Never ever again.
“No…” She hears a voice whisper inside of her skull. Something claws at her brain and she lets out a terrible shriek as she falls to her knees. Everything that she knows is collapsing around her and the sky is still screaming.
Then – quiet.
Everything dies off as Alyssa hits the ground. She is still and the world around her finally gets a chance to move. Just a little.
“Oh please…” Lynn whispers as she crawls towards the center of the room where Alyssa’s body lays draped across Dan’s. Mike and Jason follow her, while Brandon stays behind with his arms wrapped tightly around a crying Sami. “Please don’t be….” She pleads with the air as she gets close enough to reach out a hand to Alyssa’s arm. “Oh, you guys, please! J-just be okay!”
But before she can touch them, Dan’s eyes flutter open.
“Lynn?” He whispers.
Lynn swallows a sob and launches herself at him, ignoring Alyssa for the moment, in order to wrap him in a giant bear hug. He grunts at the pain that runs through his body at every touch, but eventually relents enough to wrap one arm around her back.
“Ah – I’m all right.” He informs her. But he can still feel a strange pressure on his legs and he looks down to see Alyssa, seemingly asleep, with her arms draped around him as if she belonged there.
He pulls out of Lynn’s grasp and sits up; she remains unmoving and still.
He hates it.
a/n: don't worry! I'm not quite dead. I don't die in BANDKIDZ - that'd be too depressing. I think Jones'll have to save me. Because, even though he has a small role in the story, he has a big part of my past and has become the best healer i've ever imagined.
also, once i'm semi-concious the world begins to destroy itself and so there's a mad rush to get out of danger.
It's crazy-fun.
Not friends-locked, because it isn't worth stealing and also too confusing to take and also also because i feel like showing it off for fun.
